Maramureșean Village Museum

It is located on Dobăieș Hill, at the exit from the municipality towards Vadu Izei. Here they are restored and preserved among the most valuable monuments of popular architecture in Romania (most of them being definitely dated with inscriptions engraved or carved in wood during the 16th, 17th, 18th and 19th centuries). The museum is included in the ICOM and UNESCO networks.


Ethnographic Museum of Maramureș

It is located in a monumental building (19th century), itself a historical and architectural monument. It has a permanent exhibition of ethnography and folk art, also having spaces for thematic, temporary exhibitions, with a total exhibition area of 1300 square meters. It is open to the public all year round and integrated into the ICOM – UNESCO circuit.


Museum of History and Ethnography

It is located in the complex of buildings located in Piața Libertății, no. 15, building dated from 1730 and included in the list of monuments. The museum holds nationally recognized collections of great value (Bronze Age collections, documents, etc.). works with a thematic exhibition in a space of 250 sqm. The department has a rich documentary sector, organized scientific warehouses, cabinet / laboratory.


Museum of Natural Sciences

It is located in the complex of buildings in Piața Libertății, no. 15. Within the section, the most valuable and rich collection of flora of Maramureş “Herbarul Ing. Arthur Coman” is preserved, as well as valuable collections of fauna, micromycetes, but also mineralogy, etc. In a space of about 250 square meters, a permanent thematic exhibition is organized including rare exhibits from the collections. A valuable scientific documentary sector (thousands of clichés and slides, field notes as well as the preparation and research laboratory complete the department’s inventory.


House Museum “Dr. Ioan Mihalyi de Apşa” and the art galleries;

The building includes the museum’s art galleries on the ground floor (with collections of the artists Traian Bilțiu Dăncuş, Gheorghe Chivu, Vasile Kazar, and works from the Baimărean School. On the first floor, an exhibition of the history of culture is organized, and in four rooms, historical evidence is presented in -an unchanged form from the life and activity of Academician Ioan Mihalyi de Apşa. The room to the right of the stairs, on the first floor, houses the museum’s specialized Library as well as memorial collections (Arthur Coman Fund, Artemie Anderco, etc.). The corresponding rooms on the ground floor house the ceramic and partially art warehouses. The building is a historical monument, here the Romanian Tricolor was hoisted for the first time on May 26, 1918.


The Museum of Jewish Culture in Maramureş – Elie Wiesel Memorial House;

Retreat space for holocaust survivors and their descendants established in the house where Elie Wiesel, laureate of the Nobel Peace Prize, lived.


House museum “Stan Ioan Pătraş”, Săpânta

The house where the founder of the Vesel Cemetery from Săpânta lived and created


“Vasile Kazar” museum house, Vadu Izei

Wooden house from the XVIII which, instead of a foundation, is placed on a high oak sole. It houses a rich ethnographic collection.


Lazar House Museum, Giulesti

Wooden house with a high roof like a church, but without a tower, was built in 1826. A mini-exhibition is presented with period furniture and photo panels showing great political personalities of Greater Romania


The “school museum” house, Bârsana

House museum “Dunca Pâțu”, Ieud

The house was donated to the Museum by the Dunca family, one of the oldest families in the area, documented in 1349. The house houses an ethnographic museum and a room presents the local history and highlights the struggle of the locals against the Soviet occupation

The house where the Sighetian prose writer was born.

The house where the plastic artist lived.


The Sephardic Synagogue

Sephardic Synagogue (Vizhnitzer Klaus Temple)

Built between 1900-1904 in the Moorish-Renaissance style, the only one left of several synagogues. To the right of the building is the headquarters of the Jewish Community of the city. The synagogue is located on Bessarabiei str., no. 10, and the Jewish Community Headquarters on Bessarabiei str., no. 8.
For a visit, you must ask at the headquarters of the Jewish Community.


Holocaust monument

Monument erected in memory of the 38,000 Jews from Maramureş deported to Nazi camps in May 1944.


Cemetery in Cearda (Cemetery of the Poor)

After 1950, many of the political, scientific, cultural or ecclesiastical personalities from the interwar period, imprisoned in Sighetu Marmaţiei prison, have their eternal place.


Birthplace of the painter Hollosy Simon

The house where the great painter Hollosy Simon was born


Episcopal Palace

Construction erected in 1912, based on the project of the architect Sandi Gyula. Built in a romantic style, on three levels, with two wings of the building, arranged around a central body, provided with four towers and conical roofs, it was finished in record time, its inauguration taking place on December 1, 1913.


Reformed Church

The oldest building on the territory of the city, which over the centuries has undergone several changes even in structure and style. It still retains some Gothic elements of great beauty. In front of the reformed church are two obelisks erected in 1887.


Romanian Orthodox Church – Dormition of the Mother of God

Former Greek-Catholic church with the iconostasis made in 1924 by Traian Bilțiu Dăncuş.


Ukrainian Orthodox Church – Exaltation of the Holy Cross

In terms of age, it is the third religious monument of the city.


The Administrative Building of Maramureş County

At the entrance on the western side of the building, the old coat of arms of Maramureş is kept, later it was the seat of the Maramureş Prefecture, now a public catering complex (Curtea Veche)


The building of the high school “King Ferdinand

Built in 1802, it originally housed the Reformed High School. From 1836 to 1920, the Law Academy functioned (with Law and Philosophy departments). Currently, the Ferdinand High School with a pedagogical profile operates in the building.

Park on the banks of the Iza where there are several centuries-old trees, lying naturally in the waters of the Iza, the Marmația complex, the starting point for the Solovan-Agriş Citadel Hill
