According to the census conducted in 2011 the population of the municipality Sighet amounts to 37 640 inhabitants , down from the previous census in 2002, when it had registered 41 220 inhabitants. Most inhabitants are Romanian ( 76.07 %). The main minorities are the Hungarians ( 11.73 %) , Ukrainians (1.99 %) and Roma (1.3%) . For 8.65 % of the population is unknown ethnicity . As most of the inhabitants are Orthodox confessionally ( 65.49 %) , but there are Roman Catholic minority ( 10.99 %) , Greek Catholics ( 5.23 %) , Protestants (3.05 %) and witnesses Jehovah’s (2.2%) . For 9.38 % of the population is not known confessional .
